It's hard not to start feeling sentimental after hearing the loose collection of love ballads that comprise the Notting Hill soundtrack. The romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant is filled with the modern sounds of love -- as sung by everyone from pop harmonizers (Boyzone, 98 Degrees) to classic soulsters (Bill Withers, Al Green). The Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'" adds a garage-rock edge, but if you're not up for slow-burning love tunes, this soundtrack probably isn't for you. Two guitar-based score tracks from composer Trevor Jones fill out Notting Hill and add nice instrumental touches to the disc.

The Matrix
Original Motion Picture Score [SOUNDTRACK]

Musically avant-garde elements have been utilized in film scores for decades, usually as shock elements to denote horror or the otherworldly. In recent times, modern composer Philip Glass has enjoyed varying degrees of success adapting his minimalist techniques to film scoring. Given that background, Don Davis's powerful, innovative score to the Wachowski brothers' 1999 sci-fi hit The Matrix has all the makings of a landmark. Utilizing his extensive interest and training in the avant-garde, Davis has composed what's been touted as the first "New York school postmodern" film score, a jarring departure from his hugely successful work as an orchestrator of such populist fare as Titanic, Pleasantville, A Bug's Life, and Toy Story. The Matrix weds Davis's mastery of musical detail and coloration to a largely atonal postmodern concerto that's complex, dark, and unrelenting. Many film scores have driven tonal writing and heroic motifs into the ground; Davis's deft, sparing use of them here places them in stark, effective relief. The Matrix offers up a rewarding orchestral challenge that may just be a decade -- or two --ahead of its time.

Runaway Bride: Music From The Motion Picture [SOUNDTRACK]

Ahh, the sounds of love. Hearing the soundtrack to the romantic comedy Runaway Bride , you'll get plenty of them. The Dixie Chicks, Eric Clapton, Martina McBride, and Shawn Colvin all lend new tracks to this sometimes-rootsy, sometimes-pop compilation. U2's classic anthem "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" starts things off, but Cupid quickly strikes with McBride's "I Love You," Clapton's intimate charmer "Blue Eyes Blue," and Marc Anthony's "You Sang to Me." Miles Davis's gorgeous "It Never Entered My Mind" is the one surprise cut, but the new tracks are the real highlight here.

City Of Angels: Music From The Motion Picture [SOUNDTRACK]

Largely, er, "inspired" by German director Wim Wenders' classic fable Wings of Desire, this heavenly melodrama features a high watermark for overwrought modern pop-song scores. U2's "If God Will Send His Angels" might just certify their on-the-sleeve spirituality as moribund, while Alanis Morissette's radio hit "Uninvited" conjures the frightening specter of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" (fronted by a teenage Celine Dion-in-training), making the efforts of vets Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, Peter Gabriel, and Eric Clapton sound downright Mancini-esque by comparison. Veteran composer Gabriel Yared finds himself ghettoized on the disc's final tracks, but then he only scored the film.
